PM calls for end to power shortages

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked relevant ministries and agencies to end power shortages during June.

The order was made as localities in the north have suffered power cuts over recent days due to critically low water levels at reservoirs, prompting hydropower plants to operate at less than capacity.

In addition, some coal-fired power plants in the region had to stop operations for maintenance and repair.

The government leader also instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to accelerate the construction progress of the Quang Trach II coal-fired power plant project, with a designed capacity of 1,200 MW.

The project is expected to be converted to using LNG before 2030 as part of the government’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as committed to at COP26.

The ministry is also responsible for designing mechanisms and policies to encourage investments in the development of rooftop solar power on office buildings and residential housing.
