Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked relevant ministries and agencies to take measures to speed up construction of Long Thanh International Airport in southern Dong Nai province.

Main sub-projects are lagging behind schedule so it is necessary to clarify causes and the responsibilities of relevant parties while adopting timely solutions to accelerate the project, according to a dispatch sent by the government leader to relevant ministries and agencies.

The Prime Minister asked the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee to quickly complete site clearance and hand over the land area for Phase 1 and for two roads to the airport before June 30.

In relation to the airport’s passenger terminal, costing VND35 trillion ($1.49 billion), which has delayed the entire project, Prime Minister Chinh called for strict supervision over the selection of contractors in May and for the quick completion of procedures to get construction underway and avoid further delays.

Long Thanh International Airport has total investment of an estimated VND336.63 trillion ($14.6 billion), with construction divided into three phases.

In the first phase, a runway and a passenger terminal along with supporting facilities will be built to serve 25 million passengers and handle 1.2 million tons of cargo each year.

The project began in 2021. Once fully completed by 2050, the airport will be able to serve 100 million passengers and handle 5 million tons of cargo annually.
