During a recent business trip to the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that the city research and develop specific policies suitable for the development of social housing projects in the locality.
At the same time, the PM assigned well-performing enterprises to continue implementing social housing projects under the new mechanisms and policies issued by the National Assembly and the Government.
According to the City People's Committee, among 1 million social housing units for low-income individuals and workers in industrial zones by 2030 nationwide, as projected by the Government, the new city of Can Tho city (which comprised former Can Tho city, and Soc Trang, and Hau Giang provinces) has to contribute 16,900 units.
From 2021 to 2024, more than 2,250 units were completed. It is expected that by 2025, Can Tho city will complete 1,073 more, achieving 77% of the 2025 target (1,397 units), as assigned by the Prime Minister. The remaining 324 units are expected to be completed in Q2 2026. Thus, cumulatively from 2021 to 2025, the city will have completed 3,649 units.
According to the City People's Committee, in recent times, the city has prioritized investment in development of concentrated social housing projects and housing for the people's armed forces, linked with convenient medical, educational, and transportation infrastructure.
The city has also removed difficulties for some commercial housing projects which have to reserve 20% of their land fund for building social housing as stipulated by Decree 100/2015/ND-CP; and enhanced coordination with credit institutions to facilitate access to capital for social housing buyers.
Additionally, the City People's Committee has assigned the local Department of Construction the task of monthly inspecting the implementation of solutions to achieve the social housing targets for 2025 and subsequent years.
