The People’s Committee of central Quang Tri province has granted in-principle approval for a proposal from Power Generation Corporation 2 (EVNGENCO2) to conduct research and then to implement the Quang Tri Hydropower Plant Expansion Project.

During a recent meeting chaired by the committee's Acting Chairman Hoang Nam, provincial leaders reviewed EVNGENCO2’s project blueprint, which outlines plans for a 48 MW capacity expansion on a 13.7-ha site in Huong Tan commune, Huong Hoa district.

The project requires a total investment of VND867.5 billion (over $33.4 million) and is scheduled for implementation between 2025 and 2030.

The initiative aims to increase peak-hour power generation capacity of the project from 64 MW to 112 MW, support frequency and voltage regulation within the national grid, and boost budget revenue while creating new job opportunities for local workers.

Additionally, the project is expected to enhance grid stability, mitigating fluctuations caused by renewable energy sources and allowing for more flexible operation.

By reducing curtailment of renewable energy projects, it will improve overall efficiency across the region’s power infrastructure.

Acting Chairman Hoang Nam praised EVNGENCO2’s proposal, emphasizing that it aligns with Quang Tri’s long-term development strategy and the adjusted Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) of the country..
