Authorities in central Quang Tri province have asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to propose that the Prime Minister put an end to the Quang Tri thermal power project invested in by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) International Company Limited.

With a designed capacity of 1,200 MW, the project was approved by the Prime Minister in 2013 and had total investment capital of over $2.5 billion.

However, it has yet to be implemented.

Provincial authorities also proposed converting the plant into an imported LNG thermal power plant.

The total capacity of power projects put into commercial operation in Quang Tri is estimated at over 1,090 MW. Under its electricity development plan, the province has 22 energy projects being invested in, with total capacity of 3,797 MW.
