The Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee has approved the investment policy of a project building a cross-border coal conveyor section to bring coal from Laos to Vietnam via the La Hay international border gate.
The 6-km conveyor section is set to carry 30 million tons of coal from Laos to Vietnam each year.
It will start at the border between Vietnam and Laos, and end at a warehouse in A Ngo Commune, Dakrong District, Quang Tri.
Total investment capital is estimated at VND1.5 trillion ($58.9 million).
Construction will be divided into two phases. The first phase will be invested in 2024 and the second phase will be invested by 2030.
The project is aimed at ensuring energy security by 2030, meeting local demand and reducing pressure of customs clearance tasks for commodities transported via the La Hay border gate.
The La Lay border gate receives some 4,000 tons of coal each day and the figure could increase to 12,000 tons during peak periods.
In 2023, Quang Tri imported 2.2 million tons of coal from Laos.
