Spain's household plastics market is projected for strong growth in the coming years, particularly for new product lines such as bioplastics, creating significant export opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises specializing in plastic and bioplastic products.
According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Spain, the country is implementing policies to promote the production and consumption of bioplastics and reduce single-use plastic waste. This shift presents a prime opportunity for innovative companies that utilize clean technology.
The Spanish household goods market, driven by bioplastics and smart home furnishings, is forecast to reach $5.08 billion by 2033.
Currently, Vietnam exports 8% of its plastic products to the European Union, with Spain identified as a key potential market. Spain accounts for 2.16% of the global import market for household plastic products, highlighting considerable room for growth for Vietnamese suppliers. This growth is further fueled by Spain’s thriving tourism industry, expanding e-commerce, and strong government support for sustainable development. Notably, Spain leads Europe with a recycled plastic rate of 21.7% in its total raw material usage, opening doors for cooperation and technology transfer.
However, the trade office cautions that Vietnamese businesses will face several challenges when entering the Spanish market. These include navigating rigorous rules on single-use plastics and high recycling mandates, which require significant investment in technology and adjustments to production processes. Furthermore, intense competition from low-cost products imported from China creates substantial price pressure. Evolving consumer demands also mean Spanish buyers increasingly prioritize sustainable products, requiring businesses to adapt their product development and marketing strategies. Adding to the complexity are volatile global oil prices, which directly impact plastic production costs and make forecasting difficult.
Despite these hurdles, the household plastics market in Spain holds vast potential for Vietnamese exporters to expand their footprint.
"Vietnamese plastic enterprises interested in the Spanish market should conduct thorough market research to increase exports of compliant household goods," the trade office in Spain recommends. "It is crucial to focus on developing eco-friendly and bioplastic products, invest in green production technology, and leverage free trade agreements."
