Steel production down 21% in 1H

Vietnam produced over 13.1 million tons of steel in the first half of 2023, down 20.9 per cent year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA).

Steel consumption stood at over 12.48 million tons, a year-on-year decline of 17.5 per cent.

In June alone, over 2 million tons of steel were produced and more than 2.16 tons consumed, falls of 16.2 per cent and 4 per cent year-on-year, respectively.

Domestic enterprises exported over 4.38 million tons of steel in the first five months of the year, up 10.12 per cent year-on-year.

However, the value of exports was down 16.21 per cent compared to the same period last year, to over $3.44 billion.

Key export markets for Vietnam are ASEAN, the EU, the US, India, and Brazil.
