The Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) has reported significant damage to the railway sector caused by Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath.
The total damage is estimated to exceed VND200 billion (over $8 million). Of this, the damage to state-invested railway infrastructure assets is approximately VND130 billion ($5.3 million).
Specifically, railway enterprises have suffered about VND48 billion ($1.8 million) in damages. This includes VND20 billion ($809,000) in damage to assets invested by enterprises, with 17 locomotives and various other equipment submerged. Additionally, many supply and accommodation areas, routes, and working offices experienced roof damage and collapsed walls.
The loss of revenue from passenger transport is nearly VND5 billion (about $202,000), primarily due to passenger trains being delayed for many hours along the route because of the storm. The railway sector also incurred expenses to provide passengers with free meals and drinks.
According to the report, the heaviest damage was in freight transport. From September 8-13, all freight trains were halted due to road subsidence and rising floodwaters.
Between September 7-14, the railway sector canceled over 22 freight trains and more than 54 passenger trains, resulting in an estimated revenue loss of VND28 billion ($1.13 million).
