The UK Government will provide £1 million of humanitarian assistance to Viet Nam to support initial phase of the response to the impact of typhoon Yagi, the Government News quoted the British Embassy in Hanoi as announcing on September 14.

The assistance will be allocated to humanitarian partners and will reach individuals directly through providing emergency supply, cash assistance, and critical services such as health, water and sanitation.

UK Minister for Development Anneliese Dodds was quoted by the Government News as saying: “The UK Government stands beside the people affected by the devastating impact of typhoon Yagi in Vietnam. We have coordinated closely with the Vietnamese Government and humanitarian partners to identify where our support can have greatest impact.”

Yagi, the strongest storm hitting Vietnam over the last 70 years, left at least 348 people dead and missing, and about 2,000 others injured, as of 6:00 p.m. on September 15, with preliminary total damage estimated at around VND40 trillion (around $1.6 billion), according to the Vietnamese Government.
