Vietnam Airlines to adopt Airbus’s SPM solution

Ngoc Lan -

Agreement covers up to 65 A321ceo and A321neo aircraft and represents a key milestone in the national flag carrier’s ongoing digital transformation.

Vietnam Airlines has taken a significant step towards maintaining safety and enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency in its engineering operations by signing up for the Airbus Skywise Predictive Maintenance (SPM) digital solution.

The long-term agreement covers up to 65 A321 family aircraft (A321ceo and A321neo), and represents a key milestone in the national flag carrier’s ongoing digital transformation.

Harnessing the aircraft data collected from the new on-board Flight Operations and Maintenance Exchanger (FOMAX), SPM provides best-in-class predictive recommendations to remove unplanned events, alleviate operational uncertainty, and cut the cost of unscheduled maintenance.

At the same time, it brings efficiency in optimizing spare parts management and inventory, and helps the airline reduce carbon dioxide emissions by avoiding unnecessary fuel consumption caused by maintenance defects thereby contributing to more sustainable operations.

The new contract builds on Vietnam Airlines’ existing use of Skywise Health Monitoring (SHM), which supports its maintenance and engineering teams by enabling real-time management of aircraft events and troubleshooting. This helps the airline in identifying, prioritizing, analyzing, and handling in-service events, enabling quicker decision-making and minimizing AOG (Aircraft on Ground) risks.

Airbus’s Skywise is a digital aviation community comprising several modules, including reliability and predictive maintenance or health monitoring powered by the leading big data platform in aviation to offer a unique set of turnkey solutions for operators to address their technical operation challenges and shape a more sustainable way to operate and maintain Airbus aircraft.

“Vietnam Airlines is dedicated to safety, sustainability, and efficiency, and our cooperation with Airbus through Skywise represents a significant stride forward towards these goals,” said Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Executive Vice President of Vietnam Airlines. “By harnessing digital solutions like Skywise, we are confident in our ability to further reduce our environmental impact while delivering an exceptional travel experience to our passengers.”

Mr. Anand Stanley, President of Airbus Asia-Pacific, said Airbus and Vietnam Airlines will embark on a transformative journey towards more environmentally-responsible air travel. “The implementation of the SPM solution will enable the airline to reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency, and contribute to global efforts to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint,” he added.
