Vietnam among Asia’s top 5 destinations during Lunar New Year

Diep Linh -

Agoda data puts Vietnam in the top 5 most popular destinations for travelers across the Asia-Pacific region during the upcoming Lunar New Year, or Tet, holiday.

According to recent data from online travel agency Agoda, based on bookings made on its platform between January 1 and 15 for stays on February 9 or 10 for a minimum of two nights, tourists from various Asian countries are increasingly choosing Vietnam as their preferred destination during the upcoming Lunar New Year travel period, attracted by its stunning scenery, warm culture, and renowned cuisine.

The top 5 regional destinations alongside Vietnam are Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

As one of the largest holiday seasons in the region approaches, Vietnam is experiencing an influx of inbound travelers. South Koreans are leading the way, followed by visitors from China, Singapore, Hong Kong (China), and Japan. This surge in visitors promises a bustling Tet season for Vietnam’s travel industry.

The top destinations within Vietnam during the Tet holiday are expected to be Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Hanoi, and Phu Quoc Island.

Vietnamese visitors are also packing their bags for the annual break, with Da Lat proving this year’s top domestic destination. The hilltop retreat claimed top honors, ahead of seaside locales Nha Trang (second), Danang (third) and Phan Thiet (fifth). Ho Chi Minh City rounded out the top 5, placing fourth.

Increasingly, local travelers have been opting to travel beyond Vietnam’s borders over Tet, with this year’s data showing travelers preferring big-city breaks, with Bangkok (first), Singapore (second), Seoul (third), and Tokyo (fifth) filling out the top five destinations for local people who are getting their passports out this year. Fourth place Bali completed the top 5.

“Tet is a time of renewal and celebration, and we see this reflected in the travel choices of our customers,” said Mr. Lam Vu, Country Director Vietnam at Agoda. “The diversity of preferred destinations speaks to the rich tapestry of experiences sought by travelers during this festive season. Whether it’s the vibrant street life of Bangkok, the mountain retreats of Da Lat, or the serene beaches of Bali, Agoda facilitates these journeys with ease and value.”
