Party General Secretary and State President To Lam met with Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in New York on September 24 (local time).
The meeting took place during Mr. Lam's stay in New York to attend the UN Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Vietnam News Agency has reported.
Ms. Georgieva praised Vietnam and ASEAN as bright spots in the global economy, highlighting Vietnam's resilience and sustained progress attributed to strong institutions and a growth-oriented policy approach.
She encouraged Vietnam to share its economic success story with other countries, particularly those in Africa, and reiterated the IMF's commitment to supporting Vietnam's development goals, including achieving a high-income developed economy by 2045.
Congratulating the IMF on its 80th anniversary, Mr. Lam acknowledged the IMF's crucial role in monitoring macroeconomic stability, advising on financial and monetary policies, poverty reduction, sustainable and balanced economic growth, and climate change response.
The Vietnamese leader l Lê emphasized Vietnam's journey from an underdeveloped economy to one of the world's 40 largest economies. He requested the IMF's continued support in realizing Vietnam's vision, promoting economic restructuring, digital transformation, green transition, and developing new technologies while ensuring social security and poverty eradication.
Mr. Lam reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to contributing to the resolution of global issues and building a peaceful and prosperous world.
