Vietnamese farm produce exports to China are on the rise but still account for only 5 per cent of the latter’s total import revenue of $260 billion a year, an online forum on February 10 on promoting the trade of agricultural products and food between Vietnam and Yunnan province heard.

The number of vehicles transporting agricultural products from Vietnam to China rises on a daily basis, with more than 500 passing through Lao Cai province each day and over 800 through Lang Son province.

Head of the Management Board of Lao Cai Economic Zones Vuong Trinh Quoc said all activities at the Lao Cai International Border Gate resumed from January 8. More than 6,000 vehicles have carried products both ways over the past month.

Exports to China continue to meet difficulties, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department at the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development Huynh Tan Dat, said.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam, meanwhile, said the ministry continues to work with relevant Chinese agencies to open the door to more agricultural exports from Vietnam, including avocadoes, grapefruits, pineapples, and custard apples.

Vietnam posted revenue of more than $53 billion last year from the export of agriculture, forestry and fisheries products, with some $14 billion worth going to China.
