Nvidia - the world’s largest chip manufacturer - is looking to set up a chip production center in Vietnam to draw talent from around the globe, contributing to developing the semiconductor ecosystem and AI and promoting startups, according to its President and CEO Jensen Huang.
Speaking at a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on December 10, Mr. Huang added that relations between Vietnam and the US have created a foundation for cooperative activities in the semiconductor industry and AI.
Recognizing Vietnam’s potential, opportunities, and clear strategy, vision, and approach as well as its focus on infrastructure investment in semiconductors and AI and human resources in this area, he said this is considered a huge resource.
Nvidia has identified Vietnam as an important market and has so far invested $250 million in the country, he said.
Prime Minister Chinh proposed that Nvidia cooperate, accompany, and support Vietnam in building and implementing its national strategy on semiconductors and develop the semiconductor industry in all three stages of designing, building chip production plants, and packaging and testing.
Focus should be on cooperation in developing infrastructure, building training facilities and research and development and design centers, developing semiconductor chips and AI products, and building large data centers, along with high performance computing and semiconductor engineer training in Vietnam, the Prime Minister said.
Vietnam has around 6,000 engineers working at domestic and foreign enterprises and targets training 50,000 new high-quality engineers by 2030, with a particular focus on those specializing in semiconductor chip design, according to the Prime Minister.
