Nearly 5,000 full shipping containers have become stranded at ports in Ho Chi Minh City and are affecting import and export activities, according to the city’s Department of Customs.

The department said the large number of containers was the result of an increase in imports early in the year.

Stranded goods include a variety of imports, including timber, scrap, and various other commodities. Many importers listed for scrap shipments are inactive.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Customs is taking steps to address the issue by seeking and notifying the owners of stranded goods held for over 90 days.

A council will be set up to deal with the goods, including representatives from relevant departments and agencies. Unclaimed goods will be destroyed or auctioned, depending on the type of product and their condition.
