Southern Dong Nai province plans to upgrade Bien Hoa Airport for both civilian and military purposes, according to the provincial People’s Committee.

The airport was built around 30 km from Ho Chi Minh City in 1955 and has long been used for military purposes

Analysts believe the airport is capable of accommodating large commercial aircraft.

The People’s Committee has asked relevant agencies to work together to develop an investment plan.

In February, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam proposed that the Ministry of Transport upgrade both Thanh Son Airport in south-central Ninh Thuan province and Bien Hoa Airport.

The two are among 30 airports planned for upgrades during the 2021-2030 period under the national airport development master plan approved by the government on June 7.

It includes 14 international airports: Van Don, Cat Bi, Noi Bai, Tho Xuan, Vinh, Phu Bai, Da Nang, Chu Lai, Cam Ranh, Lien Khuong, Long Thanh, Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho, and Phu Quoc.

The remainder are domestic airports: Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Sa Pa, Na San, Dong Hoi, Quang Tri, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot, Phan Thiet, Rach Gia, Ca Mau, Con Dao, Thanh Son, and Bien Hoa.
