In order to resume production now that social distancing has ended, workers’ safety is the top priority, the Vietnam Business Leaders’ Forum 2021, held by the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VNCSD), the Vietnam Business Coalition for Women’s Empowerment (VBCWE), and Vietnam Economic Times and VnEconomy on October 8 in Hanoi heard.

Speakers said that, in the context of Covid-19, every company will have a different model and method to support and manage its staff, but all agreed that workers’ well-being should be promoted.

In order to maintain sustainable human resources amid the turbulence, the priority is to ensure workers’ safety in terms of legal procedures, medical conditions, and working environment, Ms. Ha Thu Thanh, Chairperson of Deloitte Vietnam, President of the VBCWE, and Vice President of the VBCSD, told the forum.

Workers have been severely affected by the pandemic, both physically and mentally, said Ms. Kelly Wyett, Senior Economist at the Abt Association, Australia. Workers in the service sector are the most vulnerable, with 60 per cent being affected physically and 40 per cent mentally, according to a survey by the Abt Association.

Workers, especially women, have been affected by Covid-19, Ms. Carly Main, Acting Counselor at the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, agreed, with reduced incomes and greater burden and responsibility.

However, Ms. Thanh said that Covid-19 has also created a chance for businesses to reflect on their activities and make changes for the safe and effective management of human resources. There will be also problems in maintaining a sustainable source of labor and creating conditions to stabilize employment, thus helping businesses recover and develop in a sustainable manner.

The forum also discussed overall problems facing the workforce in Vietnam, including diversity and inclusion, as well as models and methods in labor capital management and sustainability at specific businesses.
