Authorities in the Mekong Delta’s Can Tho city have proposed the government soon consider approving upgrades and expansions to Can Tho International Airport to meet regional standards together with the construction of a cargo logistics port, according to Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee Tran Viet Truong.

This will serve as a foundation for the city’s plan to develop an airport city on 10,000 ha, he told a recent workshop on infrastructure development in the Mekong Delta.

Infrastructure development is part of measures to help the city fulfill its targets of becoming an ecological, smart, and modern city by 2030 as well as a center of trade, tourism, logistics, processing, high-tech agriculture, healthcare, and science and technology, according to Mr. Truong.

It is envisioned as being one of Asia’s developing cities by 2045.

Can Tho also proposed the Ministry of Construction pay attention to investing in and building an international seaport in the city in line with the national seaport system planning and to build a logistics center of the Mekong Delta region in the city.

It also recommended the ministry consult the government to approve the construction of a railway connecting the city with Ho Chi Minh City.
