Chu Lai Airport in central Quang Nam province will be upgraded to an international airport under the master plan for airport development in the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050.
Under the plan, Chu Lai will be among 14 international airports of the country.
Chu Lai airport is located in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone of Quang Nam province.
It has been upgraded to serve 1.7 million passengers per year.
The airport is expected to become a growth driver for Chu Lai and Dung Quat economic zones.
Despite its modest capacity, Chu Lai is currently the largest airport in Vietnam in terms of land coverage, at 2,006 ha.
Vietnam targets to have 30 airports by 2030, including 14 international and 16 domestic ones.
