The Ministry of Planning and Investment has asked the Soc Trang Provincial People’s Committee to clarify the investment scale of the Tran De Deep-water Seaport project to ensure it is in line with general planning.
In response to the Mekong Delta province’s proposal to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of the seaport, the ministry requested it not announce Tran De as a special seaport as planned, following the general seaport development planning of the country.
The government issued Resolution No. 78 in 2022 on an action plan for the implementation of Politburo Resolution No. 13 on socio-economic development orientation and ensuring national security and defense for the Mekong Delta region by 2030 with a vision to 2045, which set out an orientation to develop Tran De into a special seaport and a gateway of the region. However, it does not clearly identify the time when Tran De will be developed into a special seaport. Therefore, the province was advised to not announce it as a special seaport, the ministry said.
Under the province’s plan, Tran De seaport will cover 1,400 ha and be able to berth vessels of up to 160,000 DWT and handle 30-35 million tons of cargo a year by 2030.
Soc Trang province is now seeking investors.
The port has been added by the Prime Minister to a master plan for the development of Vietnam’s seaports from 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050.
