Construction of the My Thuy Seaport in central Quang Tri province is facing continued delays as a result of site clearance obstacles.
The Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee had earlier directed the project investor to resume construction in September.
The project was approved by the Prime Minister in January 2019, with construction beginning on February 27, 2020. It was then delayed.
The Management Board of Quang Tri Economic Zones said construction procedures for the project were completed but site clearance work is still to be done. Implementation requires a change of forestry use purpose, which is expected to be approved by the Prime Minister in October.
Total investment in the project stands at over VND14.2 trillion ($592 million).
The 685-ha port is designed to have ten wharves capable of berthing vessels of up to 100,000 tons.
Construction will be divided into three stages. The first stage, scheduled for 2018-2025, will build four wharves at an estimated cost of VND5 trillion ($208 million). Another three wharves will be built in the 2026-2031 period with investment of VND5 trillion ($208 million), while the remainder will be built in 2032-2036 at a total cost of over VND4.3 trillion ($179 million).
The port will mainly serve the province’s southeast economic zones as well as cargo in transit from Laos and the northeast region of Thailand along the East-West Economic Corridor.
