The Generative AI Summit 2024, the first of its kind in Vietnam, was held in Ho Chi Minh City on August 18 with the theme 'Uncharted Frontiers’, the Vietnam News Agency has reported.

The event, held by New Turing Institute (NTI) and Rethink Healthcare Foundation (RHF), attracted 1,000 attendees, including top leading AI experts and pioneering AI researchers around the world.

It focused on the three main topics of “Foundational Models of GenAI”, “Practical Applications of GenAI”, and “Opportunities for Vietnam”.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, said the Vietnamese government is well aware of the importance of AI and has enacted several policies to encourage its research, development, and application.

The ministry is currently proposing a project on human resources development for the semiconductor industry by 2030, with the aim of training at least 5,000 engineers with advanced AI expertise, she said.

The ministry has tasked the National Innovation Center with collaborating with domestic and international partners and experts to establish a center for AI training, research, and application. The goal is to train 7,000 AI experts to international standards and incubate around 500 AI startups by 2030.

AI Summit is an annual event organised by New Turing Institute since 2018, aimed at connecting the domestic AI community with experts from around the world. After many years of successful organisation, the AI Summit has become a significant science and technology event with a prominent position in Southeast Asia.

Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist at Google, highlighted that while AI offers numerous benefits in daily life, it also carries inherent risks. Therefore, AI models should be developed based on community principles, avoiding biases in their creation and promoting ethical and safe AI usage.
