Seafood production and exploitation in northern Hai Phong city rose 3.71 per cent each year in quantity and 4 per cent in value in the 2020-2023 period, according to the city’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The port city exploited 123,000 tons of aquatic products last year worth over VND2.88 trillion ($118 million).
It has applied many policies and programs in recent years to develop its seafood industry, including approving credit totaling over VND697.6 billion ($29 million) for 54 ship owners to build new vessels for offshore fishing.
The city has also invested in building three fishing ports, in Cat Hai, Do Son, and Bach Long Vy districts.
In order to sustainably develop its fishing sector and protect aquatic resources, the city has decided to suspend the operations of 204 fishing vessels that were harming local resources or that had failed to meet criteria for operations.
