Hanoi has released a plan and roadmap for the transition and development of electric and clean energy buses within the city’s confines, in accordance with the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 876/QD-TTg dated July 22, 2022.

The plan also proposes comprehensive solutions to ensure the effective implementation of the roadmap and have only electric and clean energy buses plying the capital’s streets by 2035.

Under the plan, Hanoi will change its bus fleet to 50 per cent electric and 50 per cent LNG/CNG from 2026 to 2035.

Based on proposals from transport companies and approval from the Hanoi People’s Committee, four transport companies are currently undertaking procedures to invest in and pilot five electric bus routes with 76 vehicles in early 2025.

From 2026 to 2030, a total of 1,813 buses are expected to be converted. The conversion rate to electric and clean energy vehicles by 2030 is projected to reach 93.4 per cent of the total fleet to be converted.

From 2031 to 2035, a total of 238 vehicles are to be converted. By 2035, the conversion rate of electric and clean energy vehicles is expected to reach 100 per cent of the fleet to be converted.
