The Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee has agreed with a research project on the construction of the Can Gio International Container Transshipment Port in Can Gio district, the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has reported.

The port will be built on an area of some 571 ha on Con Cho islet in Thach An commune.

It will be designed to accommodate a 7-km main wharf and a 2-km barge station, and receive vessels with a capacity of up to 250,000 DWT (24,000 TEUs), trans-shipment vessels with tonnage ranging from 10,000 to 65,000 tons, and barges with a payload of up to 8,000 tons.

Total investment is estimated at over $5.45 billion.

The investment plan was proposed by MSC - a global leader in container shipping - and will be divided into seven phases to 2047, with the first two phases expected to be operational by 2030.

Once operating at full capacity in 2047, the port is projected to contribute between VND34 and 40 trillion ($1.4 and 1.67 billion) to the city’s budget

Ho Chi Minh City has set a target of developing the port into an international transshipment center for the city and the region engaged in global supply chains and with an expected capacity of 4.8 million TEUs by 2030 and 16.9 million TEUs by 2047.
