Seafood export revenue stood at $600 million in January, down 31 per cent year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
Export turnover of tra fish, shrimp, and tuna fell 50 per cent, 46 per cent, and 32 per cent, respectively, but turnover of octopus and squid and other types of fish rose 4 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively.
Exports to key markets were down sharply, including to the US, by 56 per cent, China and Hong Kong (China) 55 per cent, and the EU 35 per cent.
Economic analysts warned that 2023 will see many challenges, including the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and a possible trade war throughout the Atlantic that will continue to affect the supply of seafood in major markets.
VASEP also predicted that seafood exports may not be bright again anytime soon, as the global economy is forecast to fall into recession this year.
