Limited skills hindering workplace competitiveness

Nhật Dương -

Only 11.6 per cent of Vietnam’s workforce of 50.74 million are highly skilled.

Vietnam stands in 47th place among 60 labor markets globally and at the bottom of rankings of the eleven nations in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the ManpowerGroup’s Total Workforce Index 2022 Global Analysis.

The top 10 global labor markets in 2022 were the US, Singapore, Canada, Ireland, Australia, the UK, Israel, the Philippines, Mexico, and Malaysia.

The report reveals that, on average, a Vietnamese worker earns $275 a month, which is quite appealing to employers and potential foreign investors.

However, compared with other countries, Vietnam’s workforce remains less appealing.

With 50.74 million people of working age, Vietnam’s workforce is abundant in number but limited in skills. The Workforce Index 2022 shows that only 11.6 per cent of the workforce is highly skilled, which is almost the same as three years ago. Meanwhile, only 5 per cent of Vietnamese workers are proficient in English, which is much lower than in other countries in the region, such Thailand, with 27 per cent, Malaysia 21 per cent, and Indonesia 10 per cent.

Foreign language skills play an increasingly important role in most careers, even in technical fields. In addition English, workers proficient in other languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are also sought after.
