According to data from Vietnam Securities Depository (VSD), domestic investors opened 114,810 new securities accounts in September, down by nearly 6,000 compared to August.

Individual investors opened 114,713 new accounts and 97 accounts were from institutional investors. Domestic individuals have therefore opened in excess of 100,000 accounts each month for seven consecutive months.
According to experts, the reason why the number of securities accounts remains high in the context of social distancing is because securities companies have simultaneously applied eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) procedures, making it easy for investors to open accounts online without having to visit an office, as was previously the case.

In the first nine months of this year, domestic investors opened 957,215 new securities accounts, bringing the total number to more than 3.69 million as of the end of September, or 3.8 per cent of the country’s population.

Foreign investors, meanwhile, opened 152 new accounts in September; 107 less than in August and the lowest figure since April 2020. They opened 3,235 new accounts in the first nine months of the year, bringing the total to 38,306 as of September 30.
