The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has proposed tightening car emission standards in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City beginning in 2027 to curb environmental pollution.

Under the draft plan, cars manufactured between 2017 and 2021 will be required to meet Level 4 standards from January 2027, while vehicles produced from 2022 onward must comply with Level 5 standards starting January 2028.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha chaired a meeting on November 11 to review the draft decision by the Prime Minister on the timeline for applying national technical standards for automobile emissions.

For vehicles produced from 2022 onward, Level 4 standards will be applied nationwide from January 1, 2026, and Level 5 standards (equivalent to Euro 5) from January 1, 2032. However, in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Level 5 standards will be applied earlier, starting January 1, 2028.

By January 1, 2029, all vehicles operating in the two major cities must meet at least Level 2 standards.
