Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a conference in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on October 19 to review the progress of expressway projects across the Delta region, according to a report from the Vietnam News Agency.
At present, 11 expressway projects and component projects with a combined length of 434.7 km are under construction in the region. Of these, the Ministry of Transport oversees five projects totaling 211.7 km, including four scheduled for completion in 2025 with a combined length of 191.17 km.
Meanwhile, local authorities are responsible for six projects covering 216.9 km. One of these is expected to be completed in 2025, while the remaining five—spanning 200.9 km—are slated for completion in 2026 and to be fully operational by 2027.
The Prime Minister pointed out that several projects are experiencing delays due to land clearance challenges and shortages of construction materials, particularly sand and stone.
He directed the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee and Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to strengthen coordination in relocating power infrastructure and to complete land clearance by the end of October to facilitate construction.
To address material shortages, the PM instructed localities to share and allocate resources between projects and provinces as needed, while granting or expanding mining capacity for essential materials. He also called for the consideration of marine sand as an alternative for roadbed filling to ensure a stable supply of construction materials.
