Ho Chi Minh City is to build the $6-billion Can Gio international transshipment “superport”, with more than 6.8 km of wharves capable of berthing the world’s largest vessels. The superport will have a throughput capacity of 10-15 million TEUs, or nearly three times higher than at the city’s Cat Lai Port, the country’s largest, to create breakthroughs in the development of its marine economy.
Ho Chi Minh City has just proposed to the Ministry of Transport to open a dedicated route connecting Cat Lai - Phu Huu port with the HCM City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway to solve the constant traffic jam for the core traffic route. Cat Lai port on Dong Nai river in the northeast area of Ho Chi Minh City is currently the largest port in Vietnam with container cargo volume accounting for 85 per cent of southern provinces and 50 per cent of the country.
