During his meeting with leaders of Western Australia, held as part of his working visit to the state from October 9-11 (local time), Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam noted that relations between Vietnam and Western Australia have been growing strongly, in parallel with the overall development of the Vietnam–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
One of the highlights of this cooperation is the establishment of a direct flight between Perth (Western Australia) and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). This route not only shortens travel time and offers more competitive costs compared to many other routes linking Vietnam with Australia but also helps boost tourism, cultural exchanges, trade, and investment between the two cities.
Regarding educational cooperation, Ambassador Tam stated that Vietnam and Australia have established a Joint Working Group on Transnational Education to promote international training cooperation in various forms.
He suggested that the University of Western Australia consider the possibility of establishing a campus in Vietnam, following the successful model of RMIT University, thereby expanding joint programs with educational and training institutions in Vietnam.
In the field of trade and investment, the Ambassador emphasized that Vietnam has a growing demand for importing raw materials from Australia for production, particularly iron ore from Western Australia.
Currently, Vietnam ranks among the top five import markets for Western Australia’s iron ore, while also holding significant potential to export electronics, consumer goods, and construction materials to Australia. In addition, as Western Australia faces a strong demand for skilled labor and construction engineers, this is also considered a promising area for future cooperation.
For their part, Western Australian leaders highly valued the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Australia and reaffirmed their cooperative relationship with Vietnam.
Western Australian Governor Christopher John Dawson underscored that the long-standing and effective relations between the two sides have provided a solid foundation for enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and tourism. He also expressed support for maintaining and expanding cooperation mechanisms between the two sides, particularly in trade, education, and tourism.
Similarly, Western Australian Premier Roger Cook expressed his desire to deepen economic cooperation between the state and Vietnam. He affirmed that the state government would seek opportunities to help meet Vietnam’s energy demand and support Vietnam’s renewable energy development.
Notably, according to the Premier, Western Australia is planning to send a delegation to Vietnam in the near future to explore cooperation opportunities in this field.
Premier Roger Cook also expressed his wish to promote stronger cooperation with Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular in the coming time, especially in the fields of tourism, education and trade.
