Vietnam is piloting its first automated, advanced used cooking oil (UCO) collection system, launched by Eco Oil Vietnam in residential areas.
Utilizing cutting-edge Flow Metric and AI technology from South Korea, the system optimizes UCO collection and recycling, minimizing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable living.
This initiative contributes to the circular economy and supports the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s nationwide source-separated waste program, effective from January 1, 2025.
Experts have warned about the environmental and health risks associated with improper UCO disposal. Proper recycling, however, transforms UCO into biofuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a crucial component in global climate change mitigation efforts.
Aviation is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and countries worldwide are now promoting SAF initiatives. The US aims to increase its SAF production to 3 billion gallons annually by 2030, while Europe targets 70 per cent SAF usage by 2050.
Vietnam has also committed to similar goals, including a mandatory 10 per cent sustainable fuel being used on short-haul flights from 2035 and a complete transition to green energy by 2050.
