Led by Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation arrived in Beijing today at the invitation of Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People's Congress. The official visit marks a strategic turning point in the relationship between the two nations.
This visit represents Chairman Hue’s first direct meeting with China's top legislative leader since assuming his role and follows the historic state visit of General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping to Vietnam in December 2023.
During that visit, both nations issued a joint statement outlining the creation of a "Vietnam-China Community of Shared Future," further deepening their "Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership."
"The visit will provide strategic direction for bilateral relations," said Vietnam’s Ambassador to China, Pham Sao Mai, highlighting that Vietnam considers its relationship with China “a top priority and a strategic choice.”
Strengthening Ties on Multiple Fronts
Talks between the leaders are expected to bolster ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing political trust and cooperation across a wide range of fields.
Discussions will include economic and trade development, ongoing initiatives to resolve outstanding issues within previous cooperative projects, cultural and educational exchanges, tourism, and efforts to further strengthen the bonds between the two nations.
The two countries have witnessed a continuous deepening of economic and trade ties, reaching new heights in recent years. China, in turn, has expressed support for Vietnam’s path toward economic strength and development.
Cooperation, Stability, and the East Sea
Both nations have also achieved positive progress in managing the Vietnam-China land border, transforming it into a zone marked by peace, friendship, and cooperation.
Crucially, the visit will address the East Sea issue, where the two countries will seek to build upon existing agreements to ensure a stable environment. The talks will uphold international laws, including the 1982 UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea), in their efforts to reach a substantive and effective Code of Conduct in the contested region.
Elevating the Role of Legislative Bodies
On the legislative front, Chairman Hue’s visit holds the potential to further strengthen cooperation between the Vietnamese National Assembly and China's National People's Congress. "The cooperative relationship between our two legislative bodies goes hand in hand with the broader development of our partnership," remarked Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam, Xiong Bo.
New agreements and the creation of high-level dialogue mechanisms are expected outcomes, designed to facilitate a deeper exchange of experiences relating to governance and economic development.
Optimism for Rich Outcomes
Ambassador Xiong Bo expressed confidence that the visit will achieve "rich results," and there is optimism on both sides that the trip will serve to consolidate gains and open new avenues for cooperation, ultimately advancing the shared vision for a prosperous and stable future in the region.
