Vietnam has set a target of expanding its shrimp farming area to 750,000 ha from 737,000 and earning export revenue of over $4.3 billion this year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Export revenue was $4.1-4.2 billion in 2022, a year-on-year increase of 10 per cent.
The total brackish water shrimp farming area was 737,000 ha last year, with total output of over 1 million tons.
Speaking at a meeting on March 3 to review the development of the shrimp sector, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that in order to reach the annual target, localities with shrimp farms should link together and with associations and sectors engaged in production chains to ensure the smooth operations of the entire chain, while strengthening food safety inspections to enhance product quality for domestic consumption and export.
It is also necessary to strictly implement regulations on farming conditions, farming registrations, and the quality of animal feed and fry, and to improve weather and environmental forecasting to avoid risks for farmers, he said.
