As part of General Secretary and President To Lam’s official visit to France, Vietnam Airlines and Airbus on September 10 signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the proposed sale of five A350-900 aircraft, with deliveries expected in 2033–2034.
According to Vietnam Airlines, the MOU is part of its plan to expand its long-haul operations after 2030. Based on the agreement, the two sides will continue to study, assess and finalize relevant terms, paving the way for investment and procurement procedures in accordance with regulations.
Vietnam Airlines has identified the investment in 30 wide-body aircraft after 2030 as a key project in its fleet development strategy. The plan is aimed at meeting growing demand in international markets, enhancing the carrier’s capacity to operate medium- and long-haul routes, and strengthening its competitiveness.
Vietnam Airlines currently operates 81 Airbus aircraft, including 67 A320 and A321 aircraft and 14 A350s.
The Airbus A350 is a new-generation wide-body aircraft designed for long-haul routes. According to Airbus, more than 730 A350 aircraft are currently operated by airlines worldwide.
In the near term, Vietnam Airlines will continue to lease additional aircraft suitable for international routes to meet recovering travel demand and support the restoration of connectivity.
