The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has called on credit institutions to make greater use of data to modernize customer assessment and credit management, helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), household businesses and individuals with viable business plans and transparent cash flows gain easier access to loans at reasonable costs.
The request was made by SBV Governor Pham Duc An at the 2026 Banking Digital Transformation event held in Hanoi on August 18.
Among six key tasks assigned to the banking sector, the Governor stressed that digital transformation must directly serve individuals and businesses while promoting financial inclusion.
Banks were urged to improve their use of data to develop new approaches to customer assessment and credit management, as well as tailor products to SMEs, household businesses, cooperatives, workers and rural communities.
The goal is to enable customers with viable business plans and transparent cash flows to access credit more easily and at more affordable costs.
The move comes as Vietnam’s banking sector shifts from basic digitalization toward greater use of data, artificial intelligence (AI) and integrated digital ecosystems.
Alongside data and AI adoption, the Governor identified cybersecurity, operational safety and digital trust as key priorities for the sector.
The SBV said stronger data-driven lending could improve credit efficiency while expanding access to finance for underserved customer groups.
