The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) has asked Vietnamese airlines to implement preventive measures against smuggling and commercial fraud by flight crews.
The order was made after four flight attendants with national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines were alleged to have transported 11.4 kilograms of ecstasy and methamphetamine from France to Vietnam on a flight on which they were on duty.
The case caused great public concern and affected the carrier’s image, and revealed the potential threat to aviation security and safety without proper preventive measures, according to the CAAV.
Under a new directive, management boards at airlines must strictly follow labor regulations. Staff who abuse their position and become involved in smuggling will be suspended and banned from holding any other position at aviation companies.
Airlines are requested to enhance regular and ad-hoc inspections of crew luggage before and after flights and to strictly punish violations.
