Vietnam’s imports of completely built-up (CBU) vehicles surged 30.8% in September 2026, reflecting stronger inflows from international suppliers as the domestic automotive market continues to expand.
Preliminary statistics released by the Vietnam Customs showed that 25,295 fully assembled vehicles were registered for import during the month, with a total value exceeding $566.7 million. The volume rose by 5,949 units from August.
In the first nine months of 2026, Vietnam imported 193,220 CBU vehicles, up 24.7% year on year, with a total import value of $4.46 billion.
Indonesia, China and Thailand remained the leading sources of imported vehicles. September shipments reached 10,254 units from Indonesia, up 20.5%; 6,757 from China, up 48.1%; and 6,528 from Thailand, up 50.8%. Combined, the three markets accounted for 23,539 vehicles, or approximately 93% of total CBU imports.
Passenger cars with nine seats or fewer made up the largest category, at 18,707 units, representing 74% of total imports.
Imports of automotive components and spare parts also remained substantial, reaching $630 million in September. Their cumulative value for the first nine months climbed to $5.66 billion, up 37.6% year on year.
