Following a highly successful sales trial last year, retail giant Costco is set to sell up to 200 tons of fresh Vietnamese lychees across its entire Australian network this season, according to a report from Radio the Voice of Vietnam.
Australia first opened its market to fresh Vietnamese lychees in 2015, with import volumes growing steadily each year. This year marks a significant milestone, with Costco placing a massive order to distribute the fruit system-wide.
At Costco stores, the premium Vietnamese lychees are retailing for a strong price of A$18.49 ($12) per kilogram.
This is the second year Costco Australia has featured fresh lychees from Vietnam. The program has expanded significantly; while last year's trial was limited to stores in Adelaide and Perth, this year the fruit is available at Costco locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.
Mr. Ly Hoang Duy, General Director of the importing company 4 Ways Fresh, explained the rapid growth. "In 2024, our company supplied Vietnamese lychees to Costco as a pilot program," he said.
"We tested them in just a few stores to see the results. The feedback was that customers loved the fruit, and Costco saw its strong potential. For this year, they requested improved packaging, even better quality assurance, and a much larger quantity."
"In 2025, Costco committed to selling the lychees across the entire Australian market, which is a huge success for us. Last year, they ordered just 10 to 15 tons. This year, it's over 200 tons. We are already developing our marketing strategy for next year and are confident that the volume will continue to grow," said Mr. Duy.
4 Ways Fresh began importing fresh lychees from Vietnam to Australia in 2019. Initially, the fruit was sold primarily in Asian supermarkets and specialty stores before the company successfully expanded its reach into major Australian supermarket chains like IGA and Foodland.
