Digitalization an aid in product traceability

The application of digitalization in the traceability of farm produce will help create new values and facilitate searches for information on products, analysts told a recent conference on promoting digitalization to support the traceability of farm produce and food products.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has introduced a product tracing system connected to eight similar systems in eight cities and provinces in the country, with the participation of 3,964 enterprises and 16,987 agricultural and food products, according to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam from the Center for Digital Transformation and Agricultural Statistics at MARD.

The system can be found at http://checkvn.mard.gov.vn.

Director General of the Sao Viet Solutions and Technology Company Vu Viet Chien said digitalization in product traceability has become a matter of public concern. Many organizations and scientists have recommended new solutions on tracing product origin but these are lacking in many respects.

Chairman of the Vietnam Digital Economy Cooperative Alliance (VDECA) Mai Quang Vinh said it is easy to create a QR code for a product, and it takes users just a few seconds to find relevant information. However, a loophole exists if management is not sufficiently tight and poor-quality products could appear in the market next to good-quality products.

He proposed that MARD develop a portal on the management and supervision of information regarding agricultural products, to help improve public access to information relating to the operations of thousands of cooperatives and also regarding processes, from production to consumption of farm produce and selling and purchase prices.

Vietnam currently has some 19,000 cooperatives, 14,200 enterprises, and 7,500 processing facilities in the agricultural sector, along with about 9,400 supermarkets and markets.
