Although motor car sales fell in February, they were up in the first two months of the year according to a report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA).
The market posted sales of 22,802 cars in February, including 17,541 passenger cars, 4,782 commercial vehicles, and 479 special-purpose vehicles. Sales of passenger cars and commercial vehicles were down 31 per cent and 7.6 per cent, respectively, compared to January. Sales of domestic vehicles totaled 14,528, down 18 per cent month-on-month, and imported cars 8,274, down 36 per cent.
There were 1,830 Honda cars sold in February, down 51.5 per cent against January, and 4,173 Hyundai cars, down 43.2 per cent. Even sales of Hyundai’s best-selling model, the Accent, fell 58.2 per cent to just 1,001.
Sales in the first two months, meanwhile, reached 53,544 units, up 34 per cent year-on-year. Passenger car sales rose 42 per cent, commercial vehicles 4.7 per cent, and special-purpose vehicles 62 per cent.
In order to boost sales of domestically-manufactured cars, a preferential policy offering 50 per cent reductions on registration fees is still being applied, helping to increase the advantages held compared to imports.
