The northern port city of Hai Phong plans to build a second Tan Vu - Lach Huyen sea bridge to connect its inner city area with Cat Hai Island, according to the municipal People’s Committee.
Total investment is estimated at over VND8.7 trillion ($34.1 million).
Under the plan, proposed by the city’s Department of Transport, the bridge is designed to have a total length of 5.44 km and a width of 16 meters. It will connect with the Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressway and Lach Huyen Port.
Hai Phong plans to submit the project to the Prime Minister for approval in the first quarter of 2025.
If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 and be completed by 2030. It will be built parallel to the existing Tan Vu - Lach Huyen Bridge.
The project is expected to help boost urban connectivity, tourism development, and links between seaports and key transport networks in Vietnam’s northern region.
Hai Phong put the first 5.44 km Tan Vu - Lach Huyen sea bridge, part of Tan Vu - Lach Huyen Highway, into operation in 2017 and it was the longest of its kind in Southeast Asia. It has, however, become overloaded and has failed to meet transport and tourism development needs in the city’s northern gateway.
