The Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board has submitted to the municipal People’s Committee a master plan to develop the urban railway system for the capital city.
Under the plan, Hanoi will build additional 96.9 km of urban railways by 2030, bringing the total length of the system to 109.8 km.
Total investment capital is estimated at $16.2 billion. Of which, Hanoi proposes to earmark $5.52 billion of mid-term public investment capital in 2026-2030 periods from the State budget.
Construction of the Line 2 from Nam Thang Long (an area south of Thang Long Bridge) to Tran Hung Dao street in Hoan Kiem district is scheduled to start by 2025. Meanwhile, investment preparations will be initiated for urban railway lines which have been included in investment plans approved for the period prior to 2030.
By 2030, the city will build and put into operation about 96.8 out of 397.8 km (24%) of the remaining lines in the current urban railway network of the capital, which is scheduled to be completed by 2035.
When fully conpleted, Hanoi's urban railway system is expected to serve 7-8% of the total number of passengers travelling by public transport means.
