Project Management Board No. 7 has been assigned to build an investment plan and conduct a feasibility study for a project widening the 61.9-km Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway linking the southern city with the Mekong Delta’s Long An and Tien Giang provinces to eight lanes.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said the first phase of the expressway was put into operation in 2010 with six lanes, including two emergency lanes.
However, after toll collections ended in early 2019, the volume of traffic increased rapidly, causing congestion that damaged the road surface.
During peak periods, the number of vehicles increased to over 51,000 a day.
The expansion to eight lanes is therefore necessary and urgent to help ease the overload while completing the expressway network as approved, according to the transport department.
The feasibility study for the expansion is expected to be completed, appraised, and approved next year, with construction to get underway in 2025 and be completed in 2027.
