HP is planning to shift some of its laptop production to Vietnam, starting from next year, Nikkei Asia has reported.
Dell, which launched a diversification plan much earlier than HP, will produce at least 20 per cent of its laptops in Vietnam this year, people with direct knowledge of the matter told Nikkei.
Apple, meanwhile, began making MacBooks in Vietnam this year, which was the first time production was outside of China, fulfilling plans Nikkei reported on late last year.
HP is also working with suppliers to shift the production of millions of consumer and commercial laptops to Thailand and Mexico this year, Nikkei also reported.
Its laptop plans would further help Vietnam and Thailand build up supply chain ecosystems for PCs, making Southeast Asia an even more attractive option for computer makers looking for production options outside of China amid the geopolitical uncertainties, Nikkei Asia wrote on July 18.
