Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked Ho Chi Minh City to accelerate the implementation of the Can Gio International Transhipment Port project.

The port, covering 571 ha at the mouth of Cai Mep-Thi Vai river in the city’s Can Gio district, with a total investment capital estimated at least at VND50 trillion ($1.96 billion).

It is capable of accommodating vessels of up to 24,000 TEUs.

The volume of cargo through the projected port is forecast to reach 4.8 million TEUs by 2030, and 16.9 million TEUs by 2047.

The project got approval from the Prime Minister in January this year.

The port will play a strategic role in the development of marine-based economy and logistics, and enhancing regional connectivity with the global supply chain.

At a national teleconference held on June 22 to accelerate substandard housing eradication, key transport projects, and public investment disbursement, the PM also required HCM City to take stronger measures to speed up construction of other key transport projects in the city.
