Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bill Winters, who are both attending the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28), co-chaired an event in Dubai, UAE, on December 1 to raise finance to help Vietnam achieve its net-zero emissions targets, according to a report from the Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

Speaking at the event, held on the sidelines of COP28, Prime Minister Chinh reiterated that participating countries at COP26 jointly committed to achieving net-zero emissions, working towards energy transition, reducing methane emissions, protecting forests, and enhancing community and environmental resilience.

With the commitments made at COP26, Vietnam and international partners adopted the Political Declaration on establishing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), with the goal of implementing a green transition, he said.

The Prime Minister suggested that organizations and businesses establish a new vision, adopt new thinking, show greater determination, and take more drastic action to accompany the Vietnamese Government in achieving climate change response goals.

They were urged to continue assisting Vietnam in perfecting mechanisms and institutions, financial resources, technology, management experience, and human resources to realize its desire for open policies and mechanisms, smooth infrastructure, and smart governance to help Vietnam transition to green energy and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Mr. Winters, for his part, expressed strong support for Vietnam’s commitments and actions in green transition towards reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

He said Standard Chartered will increase its support to Vietnam in raising funds, attracting green financial resources, and promoting green growth in line with commitments made at COP26. The bank also aims to contribute to Vietnam’s development, including the establishment of a green capital market and carbon credit market.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Chinh and representatives from Vietnamese ministries and agencies and international organizations witnessed the exchange of nine cooperative agreements between ministries, agencies, organizations, and businesses on supporting Vietnam’s green development.

At an earlier reception for Mr. Winters and other leaders of Standard Chartered, Prime Minister Chinh expressed a hope that the bank would continue assisting Vietnam with preferential financial sources to promote green growth, digital transformation, and sustainable energy transition. He also encouraged investments in strategic infrastructure, including digital and green infrastructure, and key infrastructure projects.

Vietnam will continue creating favorable conditions for Standard Chartered to maintain and expand its operations in the country, in a spirit of “harmonizing interests and sharing risks”, the Prime Minister said.
