The Mekong Delta’s Can Tho city has found enough sand for leveling at the construction of two expressways passing through the city amid a shortage of sand that is hindering progress at such projects in the region, according to the city’s Department of Transport.
It said authorities in nearby An Giang province have agreed to Can Tho city and Hau Giang province exploiting its sand mines, which have a total reserve of over 7 million cu m.
The total volume of sand needed for the Can Tho - Hau Giang section of the North - South Expressway and the section of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway passing through Can Tho is estimated at over 5 million cu m.
Earlier, the Ministry of Transport said an estimated 15 million cu m of sand will be needed for leveling at the North - South Expressway section connecting Can Tho city and southernmost Ca Mau province. However, the shortage of sand led to delays in the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau section.
The section has a total length of 109 km and estimated investment of over VND27.25 trillion ($1.16 billion). The Can Tho - Hau Giang section is 37 km long, with capital of VND10.37 trillion ($439 million).
The Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway runs for 188 km in total, passing through Can Tho and An Giang, Hau Giang, and Soc Trang provinces. Investment is estimated at VND44.7 trillion ($1.87 billion).
The section passing through Can Tho is 37 km long, and the construction cost is estimated at over VND9.8 trillion ($415 million).
